Medusae (EN, PL)

I shall speak about women’s writing: about what it will do. Woman must write her self: must write about women and bring women to writing, from which they have been driven away as violently as from their bodies – for the same reasons, by the same law, with the same fatal goal. Woman must put herself into the text – as into the world and into history – by her own movement.

dę mówić o pisarstwie kobiecym (écriture féminine): o tym, co ono spowoduje. Chodzi o to, żeby kobieta wreszcie siebie napisała: musi zacząć pisać o kobiecie i wprowadzić kobiety w świat pisma, z którego zostały wyparte z taką samą gwałtownością, jak i z odczuwania swoich ciał; z tych samych powodów, tym samym prawem i w tym samym, śmiercionośnym celu. Kobieta musi sama, własnym wysiłkiem, wstąpić w tekst — jak w świat i w historię.

In 2017 I experienced two massive heartbreaks, the second even bigger than the first; accompanied by many personal misfortunes, illnesses and losses. In the years 2018–2019 I didn’t create art as frequent as I used to; I was consumed by practical life and survival. But I was creating a little bit anyway, and when in 2020 I made my Medusa costume, I realized that Medusa was a mysteriously repeatitive motif in my art during the last years. Back then I even bought, unconsciously, an air plant called Tillandsia caput medusae (it has a beautiful name in Polish: oplątwa).

Emboding Medusa in a poem and in real life as a character is empowering in a special way. Doing a research I realized that I’ve read Hélène Cixous’s famous essay The Laugh of the Medusa during my studies, and that must have had an impact on me. I subconsciously chose her as a matron in the moment of experiencing the greatest sorrow and rage in my life. 


Female rage gives her a power to survive.
